For a special gift, I decided to create a custom version of the classic board game Catan, utilizing a variety of fabrication techniques. As a game that’s perfect for three-dimensional interpretation, Catan provided a fun and engaging challenge, and I’m thrilled with the final result.
Each landscape piece was crafted using 3D printing, priming, hand painting, and lacquering to bring the hexagonal tiles to life. To minimize plastic use, I designed the bases to be laser cut, and each tile features six diametrically opposed magnets, allowing the pieces to snap together seamlessly. I also designed distinct water tiles, smaller than the surrounding areas, with a ring of water tiles that encircle the play area. Finally, I created a custom housing for the entire set, ensuring the game could be easily stored and packed away in a tidy box, drawing inspiration from the original Catan set. This project was a rewarding blend of design, fabrication, and craftsmanship, bringing a beloved game to life in a unique, hands-on way.
